Reflexology

As with most other complimentary therapies, reflexology works on the principle that the main aim of the body’s energy is to keep itself in healthy balance and to find ways to heal itself when balance is lost.

Reflexology has its roots in ancient medical practice.  Pictures exist in the tomb of an Egyptian king (Ankhmahor Saqqara, 2300BC) showing this therapy.  Many principles of ancient Chinese medicine with its pressure points and energy meridians are also used in reflexology.

Refelxology suggests that every part of the body is connected by reflex zones or pathways, terminating in the soles of the feet, palms of the hands, ears, tongue, and head. The reflex zones relate to all areas of the body through ten longditudinal zones, which are symmetrical, with five on either side of the body.

Tension, congestion, or some other imbalance will affect the whole zone, such as the foot, to bring about a change in other specified parts of the body. It is thought that malfunction in any pert of the body miay result in tiny crystalline deposits of calcium and uric acid in the nerve endings of the feet. Gentle pressure is thought to facilitate the breakdown and release of these deposits and so promote health and well-being. This is referred to as detoxification, and the signs that it is occurring as a ‘healing crisis’. Once this process has occurred healing can begin.
