Herb Walkshops

These are one day events comprising a herb walk, teaching session and practical workshop. The walkshops are designed to be a whole programme, giving you a very practical understanding of how to use herbs through the growing seasons. Each walkshop can also be treated as a one-off event, so if you just have a particular interest you can pick which one(s) will suit you best.

Herb Walkshops

Introduction

Each month during Spring, Summer, and early Autumn 2010 we will be hosting a day of herb walks and workshops at Urban Fringe Dispensary on Colston Street, Bristol.

The day will start with a herb walk at 11.00 am in Castle Park, Brandon Hill, or elsewhere in the Urban Fringe if group transport is available. We will have lunch there as well, if the weather is amenable, so please bring a packed lunch. Afterwards we will go to the shop on Colston Street. The workshop will start with classroom-based learning and then a practical session on making herbal preparations. We will look at herbs that are in season, and will focus on one particular herb as the main herb to illustrate the central points of each particular walkshop.

We will be looking at herb actions for these plants – introducing a way of systematising your knowledge of herbal medicine and how to assess herbs through taste and appearance. The emphasis here is very much on experiential learning, so we’ll be making teas and decoctions, and tasting tinctures. At each workshop we'll make a preparation for the main herb. This might be a tea, tincture, infused oil, cream, syrup, salve - see details of each individual walkshop.

Overall, we are aiming to make the vast ocean of herbal knowledge more accessible, so you can start to build on your own knowledge and understanding from a highly practical standpoint.

The workshops will be led by Max Drake MNIMH
