Hidden Allergies

Hidden allergies are often to foods that are harmful to some individuals, but whose harmful affects are not immediately obvious. Also, the mechanism by which these hidden allergies result in symptoms seems to be quite different from how the more obvious allergic or hypersensivity reactions take place, and is still not fully appreciated or understood.

What are the symptoms of hidden allergies?

Hidden allergies can produce a variety of symptoms and can affect almost any organ. Often patients report multiple symptoms - such as chronic migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, weight problems, depression, insomnia, constipation, asthma, anxiety, headaches, hyperactive syndrome, diarrhoea, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, skin problems, pre-menstrual syndrome, aches and pains.

Symptoms frequently persist for decades and patients often report that multiple visits to their doctor have not resolved their problems.

If you suspect that you have an alllergy or intolerance to something, however mild, it is worth cutting out the usual suspects from your diet. These are, in order of likeliness, wheat (including all wheat products, gluten (all products containing gluten), dairy products, citrus fruits, alcohol, caffeine beverages (including coffee and tea), solanaceae family vegetables and fruits (tomatoes, peppers, chilli, aubergines, potatoes), sugar, refined products in general. One piece of useful advice is to not eat anything that requires and industrial revolution to produce it. Basically, not tinned or other processed foods. The first and most simple thing though, particularly for digestive problems, fatigue, aches and pains, is to cut out wheat. It is often the case that doing this solves all sorts of problems, and also many people find that after a few wheat-free months they are able to slowly reintroduce it into their diets without any adverse effects.
